Title: WWII: Yalta Conference
Link: http://militaryhistory.about.com/od/worldwarii/p/yalta.htm
Summary: As WWII was coming to a close, the leaders Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin or the "Big three" meet at Yalta in Ukraine to discuss the fate of postwar Europe. At first, Churchill and Roosevelt wanted to meet in a neutral country like one in the Mediterranean but Stalin refused citing health concerns. Each leader held their own agenda to bring to the meeting. Roosevelt wanted Soviet support against Japan, Churchill wanted free elections in Soviet states, and Stalin wanted to build a sphere of influence in Eastern Europe. On regards to Germany, the three decided that Germany should be divided into three occupation zones (later it would be four). Stalin also promised to enter the war in the Pacific with Japan 90 days after the defeat of Germany.
Significance: It is significant because even before the war actually ended, the world's largest influential leaders could meet and cooperate with one another regarding large international issues. It also made the United States seemingly give a pledge that it would help countries in need of aid even if it is in the future. This meeting also seems to foreshadow what would happen in the Cold War because the leaders of Democratic countries wanted everyone to receive rights, but the Soviets would continually oppress smaller nations and deny many of its citizens basic freedoms.
